Overview & Highlights

Nestled in the heart of Biggar on High Street, The Fryery is a standout destination for anyone craving expertly crafted fish and chips with a conscientious twist. Specializing in traditional British fare, this charming eatery elevates the classic fish supper experience with a commitment to sustainability, gluten-free options, and portions that satisfy without overwhelming.

The moment you bite into their golden, light, and crispy batter, you understand why The Fryery has earned such devoted fans. The fish itself, while not cod as some might expect, delights with its fresh, flaky texture that melts effortlessly on the palate. Its sustainable sourcing speaks volumes about their dedication to quality and environmental responsibility. For those with dietary restrictions, their gluten-free batter is a revelation—handled completely separately, ensuring each bite is safe and sumptuous.

Complementing the star of the show, the chips are nothing short of magnificent: thick-cut, piping hot, and boasting a perfect balance of fluffy interior and crisp exterior. Customers rave about the generous portions that fill the box so satisfyingly you might find yourself tempted to order seconds, just like Dave Andrews did. And then there’s the brown sauce—described by one loyal diner as “the best I have ever had”—adding a rich, tangy depth that perfectly rounds out the meal.

The Fryery’s inviting, no-fuss atmosphere echoes the warmth of its friendly staff and the local community that gathers here. Personal touches shine through; from charming banter with the staff to the ease of takeaway service, the experience leaves a lingering sense of satisfaction beyond the plate. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick bite or looking to savor a comforting meal that feels like home, this gem in Biggar promises freshness, passion, and authenticity in every serving.

Having received heartfelt praise from both locals and travelers alike—Michelle Morley praises the quick, friendly service and reasonable prices, while Bear depicts it as a place with “top-tier food” and “the greatest sausage” he’s ever tasted—the consensus is clear: The Fryery is not just another fish and chip shop, but a memorable culinary experience that stands out in the Borders region.

Small gluten free fish and chips. Sustainable fish, gluten free batter for anything you want, handled separately. Fresh, crispy and hot. Small fish as requested but good big portion of chips to fill the box. Best brown sauce I have ever had!!

Great fish supper. Light crispy batter on well cooked fish, some of the best chips we've had. Good portion size, although I did think about having seconds. We will go in again before leaving for home in the Highlands.

The food is top tier but I can never decide between the fish (sadly not Cod but once you taste it you won't care) or the sausage which is the greatest I have ever had not made by my dear old Mum. The staff are dlightful and the locals friendly.

Takeaway fish and chips that were…really good. Glad I took up a recommendation and visited.

Fantastic fish supper, also available gluten free. Easy to recommend and one of the best I've had in the Borders.

Got two special fish suppers and it’s the best I’ve had in a long time. Quick and friendly service. Reasonable prices. We’ll definitely be back.
